Strijden tegen de megamachine

Sinds de industrialisatie van Europa in de 18e eeuw wordt de aarde overal ter wereld geplunderd om de machines te blijven voeden, alsmaar meer, alsmaar verder reikend.
Waar de groene beweging een half decennium geleden nog in staat was om een kritische stem te laten horen en te wegen in het debat tegen kernenergie, zwijgt deze vandaag in alle talen over de destructieve megamachine die schuilgaat achter de digitalisering en de zogenaamde
energetische transitie. In een poging om de focus te leggen bij het naar beneden halen van CO2 en fossiele brandstoffen, worden alle andere vormen van giftige, destructieve, vervuilende, mensonterende systemen om energie te wekken onder het tapijt geveegd. En zo wordt technologie
groen, vervuiling wordt duurzaam, oorlog wordt vrede, totale controle wordt smart.

Bovenop alle horror van de ‘oude’ industrialisatie waarbij kolencentrales opnieuw in gebruik genomen worden, kerncentrales langer openblijven, mijnen opnieuw opengegooid worden, alsmaar meer bomen gekapt worden, komen vandaag de nieuwe technologieën en de mineralen en
grondstoffen die hen voeden. Windmolens, elektrische auto’s en zonnepanelen; maar ook alle elektronica waar de consument niet meer zonder kan en alle ingrediënten voor een optimale oorlogsmachine worden allemaal vervaardigd met mineralen die in Congo, Latijns-Amerika en op
verschillende plekken ter wereld geplunderd worden (kobalt, coltan, koper, lithium…), vaak in een context van totale uitbuiting en roofoorlog. Klimaatopwarming is vandaag een feit; de gevolgen zijn
onomkeerbaar en treffen vooral de armen; het zijn zij die het eerst verdrinken in de overstromingen door slechte behuizing op slechte plaatsen, het zijn zij die stikken van de hittegolven door krappe
behuizing in wijken met weinig groen. (Groene) technologie betekent oorlog; oorlog tegen de natuur, tegen de mensen, tegen de mogelijkheid van een leven vrij van uitbuiting en onderdrukking. Kapitaal en Staat betekenen oorlog, in welke kleur ze ook verhuld worden.

Meer dan de horror van deze techno-industriële nachtmerrie op te lijsten, willen we nadenken over hoe we ertegen kunnen vechten, en waarom. We stellen ons de vraag hoe energietransitie, klimaatverandering en oorlog gelinkt zijn, en hoe dit onze strijden vandaag beïnvloedt en
vormgeeft. Mensen overal ter wereld vechten op hun manier, in hun context en met hun middelen. We inspireren ons met de strijden van kameraden uit British Columbia (Canada) die vechten tegen de bouw van een nieuwe pijplijn met vloeibaar gas, strijden tegen lithiummijnen in Spanje en Portugal, bosbezettingen in Brussel, Gent en nabij de grootste bruinkoolmijn van Europa in Hambach (Duitsland); strijden tegen een site voor kernafval in Bure (Frankrijk), strijden tegen de oorlog in Oost-Congo en de linken die gemaakt worden met België door de strijdassamblee in Brussel.

Lutter contre la méga-machine

Depuis l’industrialisation de l’Europe au XVIIIe siècle, la terre a été pillée dans le monde entier pour continuer à alimenter les machines, toujours plus, toujours plus loin.

Alors qu’il y a une demi-décennie, le mouvement vert était encore capable d’élever et de peser une voix critique dans le débat contre l’énergie nucléaire, il est aujourd’hui silencieux dans toutes les langues au sujet de la méga-machine destructrice qui se cache derrière la numérisation et la soi-disant transition énergétique. Pour tenter de mettre l’accent sur la réduction des émissions de CO2 et des combustibles fossiles, toutes les autres formes de systèmes de production d’énergie toxiques, destructeurs, polluants et dégradants sont balayées sous le tapis. C’est ainsi que la technologie devient verte, la pollution devient durable, la guerre devient la paix, le contrôle total devient smart.

En plus de toute l’horreur de l’« ancienne » industrialisation où les centrales au charbon sont remises en service, les centrales nucléaires restent ouvertes plus longtemps, les mines sont rouvertes, de plus en plus d’arbres sont abattus, aujourd’hui viennent les nouvelles technologies et les minéraux et ressources qui les alimentent. Les éoliennes, les voitures électriques et les panneaux solaires ; mais aussi toute l’électronique dont le consommateur ne peut plus se passer et tous les ingrédients d’une machine de guerre optimale sont tous fabriqués avec des minerais pillés au Congo, en Amérique latine et au différents endroits du monde (cobalt, coltan, cuivre, lithium…), souvent dans un contexte d’exploitation totale et de guerre de prédation. Le réchauffement climatique est un fait aujourd’hui ; les conséquences sont irréversibles et touchent principalement les pauvres ; ce sont celles et ceux qui se noient les premiers dans les inondations à cause de logements insalubres dans des endroits mal situés, ce sont celles et ceux qui suffoquent dans les canicules à cause de logements exigus dans des quartiers avec peu de verdure. La technologie (verte) est synonyme de guerre, de guerre contre la nature, contre les humains, contre la possibilité d’une vie libre d’exploitation et d’oppression. Le capital et l’État sont synonymes de guerre, quelle que soit la couleur dont ils sont recouverts.

Plus que d’énumérer l’horreur de ce cauchemar techno-industriel, nous voulons réfléchir à la différentes façons de le combattre, et pourquoi. Nous nous demandons comment la transition énergétique, le changement climatique et la guerre sont liés, et comment cela affecte nos luttes aujourd’hui et façonne. Partout dans le monde, les gens se battent à leur manière, dans leur contexte et avec leurs ressources. Nous sommes inspiré.e.s par les luttes de compagnon.ne.s de Colombie Britannique (Canada) qui se battent contre la construction d’un nouveau gazoduc, contre les mines de lithium en Espagne et au Portugal, les occupations de forêts à Bruxelles, Gand et près de la plus grande mine de lignite d’Europe à Hambach (Allemagne), la lutte contre un site de déchets nucléaires à Bure (France), la lutte contre la guerre dans l’est du Congo et les liens établis avec la Belgique par l’assemblée de lutte à Bruxelles.

Fighting the mega-machine

Since the industrialisation of Europe in the 18th century, the earth has been plundered all over the world to keep feeding the machines, ever more, ever farther reaching.

Where half a decade ago the green movement was still able to raise a critical voice and weigh in on the debate against nuclear power, today it is silent in all languages about the destructive mega-machine behind digitisation and the so-called energy transition. In an attempt to put the focus on getting CO2 and fossil fuels down, all other forms of toxic, destructive, polluting, degrading energy generation systems are swept under the carpet. And so technology becomes green, pollution becomes sustainable, war becomes peace, total control becomes smart.

On top of all the horror of the “old” industrialisation where coal-fired power plants are re-commissioned, nuclear power plants stay open longer, mines are reopened, more and more trees are cut down, today comes the new technologies and the minerals and resources that fuel them. Windmills, electric cars and solar panels; but also all the electronics that consumers can no longer live without and all the ingredients for an optimal war machine are all manufactured with minerals plundered in Congo, Latin America and different places around the world (cobalt, coltan, copper, lithium…), often in a context of total exploitation and predatory warfare. Climate warming is a fact today; the consequences are irreversible and mainly affect the poor; it is those who drown first in floods due to poor housing in bad places, it is those who suffocate from heat waves due to cramped housing in neighbourhoods with little greenery. (Green) technology means war; war against nature, against people, against the possibility of a life free from exploitation and oppression. Capital and State mean war, whatever colour they are cloaked in.

More than listing the horror of this techno-industrial nightmare, we want to think about how to fight against it, and why. We ask how energy transition, climate change and war are linked, and how this affects our struggles today and shapes. People around the world are fighting in their ways, in their contexts and with their resources. We are inspired by the struggles of comrades from British Columbia (Canada) fighting against the construction of a new liquid gas pipeline, comrades fighting against lithium mines in Spain and Portugal, forest occupations in Brussels, Ghent and near Europe’s largest lignite mine in Hambach (Germany); comrades fighting against a nuclear waste site in Bure (France), fighting the war in eastern Congo and the links made to Belgium by the struggle assamblee in Brussels.

Let’s discuss all this at the anarchist book fair on Sunday 18 May at 2pm.

Wanneer we de anarchistische boekenbeurs organiseren, nu in haar 21ste jaar, kunnen we niet anders dan vaststellen dat er heel weinig anarchistische publicaties op papier zijn in dit deel van de wereld dat België heet. In sommige delen van het land worden enkele initiatieven nieuw leven ingeblazen; een affiche hier, een straatkrant daar, maar het moet gezegd dat dit uitzonderingen blijven. Als gevolg daarvan hebben wij vooral stands uit andere landen moeten vragen om de kraampjes op onze boekenbeurs te komen voeden.

Sommigen van ons hebben tijden meegemaakt waarin het anders was. Waar elke maand een nieuwe anarchistische poster op straat hing, waar zines, tijdschriften, boeken en vertalingen bloeiden om
onze strijd, onze reflecties en onze debatten te voeden. Vandaag de dag is dat veel minder het geval. Veel mensen zijn tevreden met het voeden van het web en als je niet ‘verbonden’ bent, ben je je simpelweg niet bewust van wat er gaande is… In plaats van te oordelen over wat andere mensen doen of weg te dommelen in het verre verleden, willen we hier en nu de vraag stellen:

wat willen we tegen wie zeggen en waarom? Welke publicatievormen hebben we daarvoor nodig en welke obstakels zijn er om samen te overwinnen?

We willen het belang van anarchistisch schrijven terug op tafel leggen, in al haar vormen. We willen tijd, energie en ruimte geven aan projecten die tegen de stroom van digitalisering in gaan en praten over verschillende manieren om onze ideeën te verspreiden.

Ter inspiratie hebben we een aantal individuen en collectieven gevraagd om actief deel te nemen aan de discussie door te praten over hun ervaringen, hun bestaansredenen, hun moeilijkheden misschien en hun brandende verlangens voor deze wereld. Er zullen directe en geschreven bijdragen zijn van verschillende projecten zoals een anarcho-punk zine uit Brussel, twee boekpublicatieprojecten van lange datum, een in het Engels, de andere in het Frans, een krant die probeert olie op het vuur te gooien van de discussie tussen anarchisten in de Verenigde Staten, een straatkrant in Frankrijk, een mobiele distrotafel de luxe in Marseille, een straatkrant uit Brussel meer dan 10 jaar geleden, een straatkrant opgehangen op muren in Frankrijk, en een straatkrant uit Londen.

En organisant la foire du livre anarchiste, qui en est pourtant à sa 21e édition, nous n’avons pu que remarquer qu’il y avait très peu de publications anarchistes sur papier dans cette partie du monde qui s’appelle la Belgique. On voit parfois renaître quelques initiatives en certains endroits du territoire -une affiche par ici, un journal de rue par là-, mais force est de constater que cela reste des exceptions. Du coup, nous avons demandé à des compagnon.ne.s venus de beaucoup plus loin de venir nourrir les stands de notre foire….

En réalité, certains d’entre nous ont vécu des moments où tout cela était différent. Où chaque mois était collée une nouvelle affiche anarchiste dans la rue, où des zines, des journaux, des livres, des brochures, des traductions fleurissaient pour enrichir nos luttes, nos réflexions, nos débats et nos perspectives. Aujourd’hui, beaucoup de personnes se contentent plutôt de nourrir le web, et lorsqu’on n’est pas ‘connecté’, on n’est simplement pas au courant de ce qui se passe… Plutôt que de juger ce que d’autres font ou de somnoler dans de lointains passés, nous voudrions nous poser la question ici et maintenant :

Qu’avons-nous envie de dire et de proposer, à qui et pourquoi ? Quels formats avons-nous besoin pour ce faire, et quels obstacles sont là à dépasser ensemble ?

A travers cette discussion, nous souhaitons remettre sur la table l’importance des écrits anarchistes, sous toutes leurs formes. Nous voulons donner du temps, de l’énergie et de l’espace aux projets qui vont contre le courant de la digitalisation et du virtuel, et parler de différentes manières de diffuser nos idées.

Pour nous inspirer, nous avons demandé à plusieurs individu.e.s et collectifs de participer activement à la discussion en parlant de leurs expériences, leurs raisons d’être, leurs difficultés et leurs désirs brûlant à propos de ce monde. Il y aura des interventions directes et écrites de différents projets comme un zine anarco-punk bruxellois, deux projets d’éditions de livres de longue date, l’un en anglais l’autre en français, un journal qui tente de mettre de l’huile sur le feu de la discussion entre anarchistes aux Etats-Unis, un journal de rue en Frrrance, une distro de luxe de Marseille, un projet de journal de rue à Bruxelles d’il y a plus de 10 ans, un journal de rue collé sur les murs en France, un journal de rue à Londres, et d’autres encore.

Organising the anarchist book fair, now in its 21st year, we cannot help but notice that there are very few anarchist publications on paper in this part of the world called Belgium. In some parts of the country, some initiatives are being revived; a poster here, a street paper there, but it must be said that these remain exceptions. As a result, we have mostly had to ask stands from other countries to come and feed the stalls at our book fair.

Some of us have experienced times when things were different. Where a new anarchist poster hung on the streets every month, where zines, magazines, books and translations flourished to feed our struggles, our reflections and our debates. Today, this is much less the case. Many people are content to feed off the web and if you are not ‘connected’, you are simply unaware of what is going on…. Instead of judging what other people are doing or dozing off into a distant past, we want to ask the question here and now:

what do we want to say to whom and why? What forms of publication do we need for this and what obstacles are there to overcome together?

We want to put the importance of anarchist writing back on the table, in all its forms. We want to give time, energy and space to projects that go against the grain of digitisation and talk about different ways of spreading our ideas.

For inspiration, we have asked a number of individuals and collectives to actively participate in the discussion by talking about their experiences, their raisons d’être, their difficulties perhaps and their burning desires for this world. There will be direct and written contributions from various projects such as a anarcho-punk zine from Brussels, two long-dated book publication projects, one in English, the other in French, a newspaper trying to throw oil on the fire of discussion among anarchists in the United States, a street newspaper in France, a mobile distro table de luxe in Marseille, a street newspaper from Brussels more than 10 years ago, a street newspaper hung on walls in France, and a street newspaper from London.

Let’s discuss all this on Sunday 18 May at 11.30am at the book fair.

De zon schijnt opnieuw en de anarchistische boekenbeurs is terug! De
21ste editie al weer.

We willen nog steeds het papier in onze handen vieren, ver weg van de
digitale nachtmerrie die in onze intiemste kringen kruipt. Op de
boekenbeurs vind je naast boeken tal van andere publicaties, brochures,
pamfletten, posters en stickers. Van oude romans en revolutionaire
klassiekers, over filosofie en poëzie tot hedendaagse sociale kritiek of
de nieuwste oproepen tot strijd: ze vertrekken vanuit de wil om de
wereld ingrijpend te veranderen. Ze delen ideeën en proberen die te
verdiepen. Ideeën: geen vermarktbare, like-bare, brave opinies zonder
inzet.

Maar de boekenbeurs is nog veel meer!

De anarchistische boekenbeurs is ook een internationale bijeenkomst van anarchisten en anti-autoritairen, met discussies, workshops en informele uitwisseling. We willen met de boekenbeurs bijdragen aan het versterken van de anarchistische beweging in de lage landen. We zien het als een instrument om ideeën te verdiepen, een gelegenheid om voorstellen te lanceren en om banden te smeden tussen individuen en groepen. We willen onze passies met elkaar delen en een context creëren waar woorden en daden met elkaar dansen en elkaar versterken.

Onze anarchie draagt een offensieve positie tegenover de macht en een
wil tot subversie in zich. Oorlog en militarisering zijn overal rondom ons. De regering smeedt plannen om oorlogsfabrieken te bouwen, voert opnieuw de militaire dienst in en wil van het land de logistieke draaischijf van oorlogsvoorbereiding maken. Besparingen op alle fronten gaan rechtstreeks naar de oorlogskas. Oorlogsretoriek wordt het nieuwe normaal. Om het militair-industrieel complex vorm te geven, hebben de staten en het kapitalisme niet enkel kanonnenvlees en werkmensen nodig, maar moeten ze ook de aarde alsmaar diepgaander plunderen. Overal in de wereld worden mijnen uitgebreid of heropend, op zoek naar grondstoffen om hun economie te voeden. Het zijn sombere tijden, waar angst en wanhoop nooit ver zijn. Overal ter wereld vechten mensen tegen deze mechanismen van macht en geld. Voor ons is de boekenbeurs een plek om deze strijden te delen, te verdiepen, te versterken.
